Neutrog order

The Glenelg North Community Garden may put in an order for Neutrog fertilisers via the Rare Fruit Society. If you are interested for personal use, let Michael know. Orders close by Monday, 6th June.

Children’s Workshop success

The Glenelg North Community garden recently held 4 workshops in conjunction with the Holdfast Bay Council.  These were held during the school holidays at the garden and were about “Building a Terrarium” and “Crazy Critters”  There were approximately 15-20 children at each of the workshops  which were run by Monina Gilbey of Green Gecko Studios and were extremely enjoyable.  Much fun was had by all.

Recipe for the month

AS there have been loads of eggplants in the garden and they are still fruiting this recipe may be useful for those who do not know what to do with eggplants

Spicy eggplant

2 medium eggplants

1 onion

2 tomatoes

2 cloves garlic crushed

2 tablespoons kecap manis or sweet soy sauce

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 teaspoon brown sugar

2 tablespoons oil

2 teaspoons sambal oelek

Wash and dice eggplant, sprinkle with salt and let stand 1 hour

Slice onion and chop tomatoes.  Saute onions in oil for 1 minute then add garlic and eggplant. Lower heat and turn eggplants several times.

Add soy sauce, tomatoes, sugar, vinegar and sambal oelek.  Stir well, lower heat and cook covered for 10 minutes.  Uncover and cook for further 5 minutes

Other ideas for eggplant includes:-

  • Slice them lengthwise and brush with olive oil.  Place on grill part of BBQ for several minutes then turn over and grill other side – delicious as a side dish for barbecues or roasts
  • Slice eggplants or dice them and sautee in garlic and olive oil

Other favourite dishes are Baba  Ghanoush, Eggplant Parmigiana. or Moussaka – all well worth a try
